This is the Marketing Passivhaus Podcast.

Hello and welcome to the Trailer for Marketing Passive House. A new podcast focused on growing the conversation around the passive house building standard and drawing evermore people into its quiet, comfortable, low carbon fold. I'm James Turner. Husband, father, musician, writer, copywriter, marketer, cook, gardener, homeschooler, and Passive House enthusiast, based in Fredericton and South Knowlesville, New Brunswick, here in beautiful Atlantic Canada, on the traditional unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik, Mi’kmaq, and Peskotomuhkati peoples.

My journey with Passive House started back in 2011 or 2012, in a conversation I had with Garth Hood, who runs the Passive House consulting and design company, Thoughtful Dwellings, here in New Brunswick. At the time, I was curious about alternative building techniques, like cordwood, straw bale and rammed earth houses, and had fallen in love with earthships, even attending a local build site.

When I met Garth at a community garden meeting, just by chance, I told him as much, and he said something to the effect of, it's passive house for me, that's the best way forward. It was the first time I'd ever heard the term. He went on to convince me of the superior benefits of Passive House when it comes to building reliability, scalability, especially versus Earthships, air tightness, minimal carbon and energy use, improved air and health quality, and more.

I was convinced. And I've been following along ever since. My main inspiration since that time has been the work of Lloyd Alter, who I first encountered on the Treehugger blog, before a big corporation bought it and got rid of everything that made it good, including Lloyd. Fortunately, Lloyd persisted, starting up what is now my most read sub stack, Carbon Up Front, which has included many an envy inducing post about Passive House conferences and building tours.

Through Lloyd's work, I was introduced to people like Bronwyn Barry, of Passive House BB, and her delightfully simple call for buildings to be boxy but beautiful. And Michael Eliason, of Larch Lab, who points out that these so called dumb boxes are, quote, the least expensive, the least carbon intensive, the most resilient, and have some of the lowest operational costs compared to a more varied and intensive massing.

I've since started following the Passive House Network, run by Ken Levenson, Passive House Canada with CEO Chris Ballard, and the Passive House Accelerator, started by Michael Ingui, and now led by Zack Semke, who also co hosts the affiliated and excellent Passive House Podcast with Matthew Cutler- Welsh, Mary James, and Ilka Cassidy.

In short, when it comes to Passive House related resources and content, there is a lot of really great material out there. And yet, I feel there's room to have a separate space devoted solely to the only conversation about Passive House that I feel I can meaningfully contribute to as a non architect, non builder, non engineer, non scientist, non mathematician, and that is spreading the word.

Hence, marketing Passive House. This podcast, where I talk to builders, architects, designers, suppliers, owners, and other experts in the passive house and high performance building space about the benefits of making buildings that meet or aspire to the passive house standard, as well as what's working and what's needed when it comes to spreading the word about those benefits beyond those who already know.

For me, this is the perfect marriage of the thing that I do, Marketing, messaging, communication, copywriting, and the thing that I love, Passive House high performance and alternate building techniques. I hope you enjoy the conversations as much as I do, that you get inspired, get motivated, and get to work spreading the word about Passive House.
